Short S.23 C-Class Empire flyingboat
The oiginal of the Empire Flying boats started at British Air ministry for transport of people and mail between Great Britain and it's colonies in Africa and Australia.
The Empire was known officially as the C-klass. All models from Imperial Airways had a 'callsign' that started with a C. The first was the G-ADHL Canopus which was ready in June 1936 and flew first on July 3th. Totally 42 Empires were build, all in factory of Shorts Brothers in Rochester Great Britain.
Imperial Airways and the company that took it over (BOAC), Quantas and TEAL had the machines in commercial use , but Royal Air Force, Royal Australian Airforce , New Sealand and Canadian airforce used them as military planes during WW2, mainly for underwater boat searching and military transport.
This is the first model designed by Bart, the construction and building method is very simple and based on the models of Ivan Pettigrew which means low weight and good flight performance.
Building the model is a mix of traditional wood build from drawing and lasercut puzzle parts. The fuze is made of 5x5mm balsa and lasercut parts, the wing mainly lasercut parts, only sheeting is partly custom work. The model has to be finished with oracover or similar to keep weight low.
The model actually flies like a parkflyer, which means very relaxed and slow, becauise of the big V bottom in the fuze is take off and landing very easy on the water. The model flies average 20+ minutes on 1 3S 5400mAh Lipo.
